So when life gets stressful, when they're around other smokers, when those old triggers fire up, their brain defaults back to the behavioral memory that was never overwritten - along with that familiar voice saying "See? I knew I couldn't really do it."

This is why most hypnotherapists live in fear of cessation work.
The entire cessation industry has been treating the symptom (the substance desire) while completely ignoring the cause (the behavioural identity, memory patterns, and the fundamental doubt that sabotages everything).

The problem wasn't that people couldn't stop smoking. The problem was that the methods they'd used before had left them still identifying as smokers who were just abstaining.
They were white-knuckling their way through life, constantly fighting cravings, instead of genuinely becoming someone who simply doesn't smoke.
They were smoke free for a while but in their minds, they still WERE smokers who were just not smoking. The behavioural memory, the identity, the ingrained patterns - none of that had been addressed. But more importantly, that fundamental doubt - "Can I really do this?" - was never eliminated.
Traditional addiction-focused approaches create smokers who don't smoke rather than people who are non-smokers. And they leave that doubt intact, like a ticking time bomb.
